As part of my birthday month ; ) celebrations, my mom took me to two special places near the University of Cincinnati... my old stomping grounds. Rohs Street Cafe---where I have tons of great memories, where the art on the walls is done mostly by friends, and where the barista is often someone I knew back in college--- and Duttenhofer's Rare and Used Books. In college I lived across the street from Duttenhofers and spent hours exploring the cramped, dusty aisles of beautiful old books.
I picked out two C.S. Lewis books-- "The Great Divorce" and "The Problem of Pain". They cover some hard questions that have literally been keeping me up at night recently and C.S. Lewis is pretty much THE MAN when it comes to tackling tough issues like heaven and hell and suffering and joy. So I'm excited to jump into them.
If you want a swift but loving kick in the spiritual/intellectual butt, read through some of the hundreds of C.S. Lewis quotes. Like...
"There are two kinds of people: those who say to God, "Thy will be done," and those to whom God says, "All right, then, have it your way."
or
" Miracles are a retelling in small letters of the very same story which is written across the whole world in letters too large for some of us to see."
or
"You don't have a soul. You are a Soul. You have a body."
or, on a lighter note
"You can't get a cup of tea big enough or a book long enough to suit me."
What a guy : )
Kind of a crazy week here. Daniel's grandpa passed away so we're going back up to his home town. Plus we're currently hosting a super cute husband/wife musical duo from Memphis this week. Excited to catch their show tonight!
Have a good one!
Arian
I love old book stores, it's like a vacation to the past.
ReplyDeleteSo sorry to hear about Daniel's Grandpa!
ReplyDeleteLove the cappuchino milk foam!! mmh...I can smell it! And love books!
have fun with todd and emily!! i miss them!! and you guys, of course. so nice to see pics of cinci, i'll have to check out those spots when i visit my brother someday.
ReplyDeleteThe Great Divorce is one of the most beautiful and thought provoking books that I have ever read. It's probably on my top ten list of favorite books.
ReplyDeleteI LOVE Duttenhofer's! When I went to UC, I regularly missed my bus because I couldn't resist stopping in "for a few minutes."
ReplyDeleteCan I just tell you how much I LOVE C.S. Lewis?? I made the goal in my teens to read all (46) books he wrote by the time I was 25... to say the least that summer was one of all READING! I read about 25 that summer and it still goes down in my mind as the best summer yet (besides the summer I got married) His books challenge you, inspire you and help you to think about God in new ways! Hurray for "The Man" also my English tutor in High School (I was home-schooled) studied in Oxford at his home and was taught by his personal biographer! uh- it still amazes me now :)
ReplyDeleteYou're completely right - C.S. Lewis certainly does kick some butt! Have you read Screwtape Letters? While I certainly enjoy all of Lewis' books, this one is by far my favorite.
ReplyDeleteNow I want to go to the bookstore... :)
The minute I saw "Duttenhofers" my senses reeled - the smell! the narrow aisles! the creaky floors! the dust! the weird crap you can't find anywhere else! nobody bugging you to buy or move along!
ReplyDeletemy mouth is even watering - once you're in there long enough, the smell becomes a taste! love that place.
