Playhouse in the Park

The fine folks at Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park are celebrating its 50th season this fall and I get to be one of the local artist to display a Playhouse-inspired piece in the lobby. I'm excited to see what the other artists and photographers come up with!

Here's my piece. I'll admit it took me several rounds to come up with something I was happy with. I kept trying to portray love ON stage. But I kept sketching ideas then tossing them.

Finally I thought back to my last quarter as a set design major at CCM when Daniel and I first started dating. Having spent SO many hours designing, building, and painting sets, I could only explain my feelings in theatrical terms. Falling in love with Daniel meant letting him backstage. Sets look beautiful from the audience's perspective. But it's an illusion. Back stage things are messy, bare, dark, real... Nothing is hidden back there.

So that's the idea behind this little piece...real love happens backstage.
